There are more than three bug reports and a number of questions with
respect to an attempt to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 failing with the
error message

"Could not determine the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by
held packages.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu"
(e.g. bug 663158, bug 658458 and bug 658581)

Most of the persons had xserver-xorg-video-nouveau installed, and after removal
of that package the upgrade went ok.
If you have that package installed, you might try to remove the
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package and try the upgrade again.

If that does not help please attach the contents of the /var/log/dist-
upgrade/ folder, they should give more details of what went wrong.

** Changed in: update-manager (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Incomplete
