This was the bug fixed in partman-partitioning 78ubuntu2 (ubiquity
2.5.11):

partman-partitioning (78ubuntu2) natty; urgency=low

  * Support archdetect being anywhere in PATH rather than assuming it to be in
    /bin.  It's moved locations in archdetect-deb.

I've confirmed that this is no longer happening on a current Xubuntu
i386 daily-live build, and other Xubuntu architectures also seem to have
a sufficient version of ubiquity.
