Maybe instead of removing them outright, the option could be added to
hide them, in the same way it's possible to show certain icons on your
desktop. That way, the default installation is a little less cluttered,
but then hiding the side pane and using these icons can also be
considered aesthetically pleasing. Giving the user the option to reveal
these icons would keep everyone happy in this case.
