I had a similar problem, it affected not only xsane but many related programs. Reason was (at least in my case) a somehow defective library /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epson2.so.1.0.20 . I manually recompiled the collection of sane-backends and copied back and forth. Finally (if I either delete that library or replace it with the "home-compiled" version) the mistake disappeared.
