Executive summary:
command line power down works, from KDE it works in about 35% of all cases.

Details:

When I go to terminal 1 with CTRL-ALT-F1, log in as root and execute "powerdown 
now"
the computer turns of, including showin immediately a nice Kubuntu logo. This 
works.

When I select "turn off" from KDE the system logs out of X normally, including 
playing the sound
and then the following happens:

20% of all cases: graphical garbage appears on top of screen and after a while 
a brief
flash of the kubuntu logo appears, just before the computer powers down

15% of all cases: kubuntu logo is shown and shutdown proceeds normally

65% of all cases:
monitor looses input signal and goes to sleep, computer completely stuck, have 
to
switch off manually by pressing power key for 7 seconds.

I seem to remember reading something like this a long time ago in the edgy 
forums,
cannot find it. My feeling is that the 

Operating system information:
Using Kubuntu Feisty, starting from Beta. 
Problem has always been present, no change
Using the ATI (and thus open source Radeon) display driver

System information:
Asus P4P800 deluxe mainboard
Samsung 172T lcd, using DVI input
Radeon 9200SE (280) video card

I could never shutdown with Edgy, which was the reason I did not install it, 
and kept with Dapper.
I hope that I will be able to shut down with Feisty!
