Abd to note - I went ahead and for the moment installed rhythmbox, it like vlc hasn't any issue discovering and playing from the external Also - filed this bug mainly on behalf on a couple of netbook users whose only option is external, if need be I could ask, if any other info hardware wise or debug is desired, for them to attach.
