I'm using a Samsung CLX-3175FN scanner. Often, but not always, simple
scan fails and can not read the scanner anymore. Once simple scan
failed, I have to restart (switch off/on) the scanner. Sometimes, that
doesn't fix the problem, and I have to reboot.
The last time it happened I changed photo resolution from 600ppp to
300.
