To add some further information, I don't get this error when booting
from a live USB created from the Lucid 10.04.1 LTS version. It only
started from 10.10 onwards. Please let me know if I should run the
apport-collect command from the 10.04.1 live USB version for comparison.

Could the problem be caused by the installer program rather than the
kernel?

I don't seem to be able to apply updates to the live USB. I've set up
persistence but it doesn't seem to be working so I don't think I'll be
able to install a kernel mainline build as the default on the live USB.
Are there any daily builds using mainline kernels?

Thanks
