Go ahead and toss it. The problem was in the HID driver for the joystick. I debugged the problem, submitted a patch at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/618853, went through the effort to build a second test kernel at the request of https://launchpad.net/~jeremyfoshee, posted my results, he ignored it, and marked it closed.
