I confirm this bug. I got a very similar error message when running update-manager or Synaptic. Ubuntu 10.10. On inspecting the list mentioned in the error message, I found an html-page with a wireless hostspot login page. Thanks Sascha!
When I removed the contents of /var/lib/apt/lists, the error message went away!
