Thanks for the bug report. Ubuntu installs vim-tiny by default. You
are correct that syntax highlighting is disabled in vim-tiny. If you
want a full featured vim, you don't need to compile your own though,
just install vim-full from the Universe Repository.
I'm rejecting this since vim-full is available in Ubuntu's repositories,
but if you disagree feel free to reopen it.
