New data:

I had another go at warm (standby) docking / undocking (with and without
the DVD drive).

First I was excited to have found a workaround solution: go into standby
and then just press the mechanical eject (2) button (instead of the blue
electronic button (1) ) - but that solution soon turned out to be only
slightly more promising:

The system wouldn't appear to crash immediately - however, it would
_NOT_ go back into standby again (either it would end up showing the
login-screen, or it would crash (half-moon blinking for eternity)), -
when attempting standby in the undocked state.

:-(

Feel like throwing the docking station out of the window... but then:
the hardware's not the problem: it works on windoze.

:-(

Anybody out there?
