I have a K50IJ as well. Speakers work fine, but when I plug the headphones in, sounds gets muted, when I bring the volume back up, it plays on both the speakers and headphones.
Had the same problem no matter what distro I tried. But Here is what is interesting, I tried a live USB of Google Chrome OS, I do not have this problem at all!!!
