Nearly same problem as above, on a Samsung Q35 (with snd_hda_intel)
Upgraded to feisty sat 7 of April 2007. (this give a -14). Sound "worked" very
strangely :
could see/hear films on various soft (vlc, mplayer) and hear flash audio. BUT
if I try to touch to sound controler, sound shuts off one for all and quite
cleanly (no crack or strange sounds).

A simple

# modprobe -r snd_hda_intel
# modprobe snd_hda_intel

could get the sound back.

Other strange behavior :
- moving the time cursor while seeing a video cuts the sound also..
- gnome mixer applet seems messed totally up with sliders,
- gnome-sound-propertie test core dumps when sound is muted.

I solved the problem by adding to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-
base :

...
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack
...

I tried with "auto" instead of "3stack", and this didn't solve my
problem, and as far as I can tell, didn't change anything to my
problems.
