Here some additional information about the problem appearing on Ubuntu
10.10:

If I type 'ps aux | grep settings' in the terminal gnome-settings-daemon
isn't shown.

If i type gnome-settings-daemon the ambiance theme starts. I also get
the error message:

** (gnome-settings-daemon:3606): WARNING **: Got less number of items in
credentials hash table than expected!

After that 'ps aux | grep settings' show gnome-settings-daemon running.

I don't know if this is relevant, but if I type in gnome-settings-daemon
after that again, I get the following error message:

** (gnome-settings-daemon:3693): WARNING **: Failed to acquire
org.gnome.SettingsDaemon

** (gnome-settings-daemon:3693): WARNING **: Could not acquire name

The ambiance theme not loading on startup is very annoying. Now it
happens every time I log in.
