@David: you're welcome! Interesting indeed. Looks like there is some sort of consensus on the Audacity forums that software play-through just cannot work under Linux. Hope that can change now.
Re my experiments with different latencies: if the CPU load is sufficiently high, the latency needs to be increased substantially if xruns are to be avoided. With Audacity recording with play-through and an Audacity build running at the same time, 150 ms seems to be more reliable.
