Glad it solved the issue for you. I do not see a good way to improve the "print to file" checkbox issue (by design, cups-pdf is treated like any other printer). But a warning issued by evince would be a nice feature, you could report it as a "wishlist" bug (in the spirit of the season ;-)), i.e. as a proposed enhancement.
