I have checked in Maverick using openoffice 3.2.1 from the 3.2.1-7ubuntu1 packages, and the proven world is not underlined by the spellchecker, while other misspelled words are, so the spellchecker is surely on. The language used is en_us. Could anyone please confirm that this one is fixed?
