** Description changed:

Occasionally when I boot into Ubuntu the sound will be non-existent. If
- I mute and unmute the sound I hear a click in the headphones. If I do
- nothing then I will hear an intermittent click first in the left side of
- the head phones then the right side.
+ I mute and unmute the sound manager I hear a "static-like" click in the
+ headphones. The headphones are brand new and the problem was occuring
+ with my older headphones as well. I have no speakers for my computer.
+
+ If I do nothing then I will hear (every few seconds) a click first in
+ the left side of the head phones then the right side. The sound will
+ continue to alternate like that.

In the past booting into windows (I am dual booting) has fixed the
problem although the sound was not working in Windows 7 either (only
after I restart and boot into Ubuntu for a second time does it seem to
- work). Also, now that the sound is not working the last OS I booted into
- was Windows 7.
+ work).

It should be noted that simply restarting my computer and booting into
Ubuntu does NOT fix the problem.

Could Win7 be toggling the sound? I am unable to kill the pulse audio
process. It has a "nice" rating of -11.
+
+ UPDATE: I just tested my "Windows is killing my sound" theory and it
+ seemed to hold true. I restarted my computer, booted into Windows 7,
+ then restarted my computer and booted back into Ubuntu. Sound now works.
+ Here's my recent timeline:
+
+ Last night booted into Windows 7; turned off my computer and went to bed.
+ This morning booted into Ubuntu to discover no sound.
+ Restarted my computer in hopes of fixing the problem; still no sound.
+ Restarted my computer and booted into Windows 7
+ Restarted my computer and booted into Ubuntu. Sound works!
+
+ Hope this helps...
