The network-admin tool which you found modifies the
'/etc/network/interfaces' file. However, the benefit of network manager
is that it will reconnect to wireless networks which it remembers when
it sees them and that it is slightly easier to connect to a new wireless
network. To configure a network manager connection you don't want to
use the network-admin tool but click on the 'nm-applet' in your gnome-
panel. It might look like two computers or signal bars or just
something swirling around. When you left click on it you should be
presented with a list of available wireless networks and by choosing one
in the list you'll be presented with a prompt for your gnome-keyring
password and then you can configure the wireless network.
