If it helps, I also experienced this on my AMD64 system.  After a fresh
install I ran a dist-upgrade and rebooted.  On reboot I ran sudo
aptitude install mozilla-plugin-gnash, restarted Firefox and went to
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/ to test flash.  The flash
section turned black, then started to show some text, and then gnash
crashed.  Firefox was still running fine.
