I can confirm this bug still exists in Kontact 4.4.2-0ubuntu5 As suggested in the upstream bug ticket this happens after marking all feeds as read in feed reader (akregator). I couldn't duplicate the bug by using the month view in KOrganizer, that seems to work fine now. The workaround to enable the akregator tray icon and close kontact by right clicking the tray icon and clicking close seems to work for me.
