i looked into this a little bit more and the driver is still fairly new and uses a firmware blob from realtek. updating the kernel won't help much, as the firmware is distributed within ubuntu. you could download the driver from realtek (there is a new version from 2010/10/25) and compile it yourself, there are instructions on how to do it on Fedora here: http://www.linwik.com/wiki/using+the+realtek+8172+and+8192se+wireless+controller+with+fedora+12 let me know if you need help with it
