Same problem here. I see that the problem is related to the partition
table that is not detected correctly or might be that the ipod has
something wrong :-?.

Doesn't work like this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/rgavril# mount /dev/sdb2 /media/ipod/
mount: unknown filesystem type 'via_raid_member'

But it works like this:
mount /dev/sdb2 /media/ipod/ -t vfat

Also, this output looks is correct:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ fdisk -l /dev/sdb
Note: sector size is 2048 (not 512)

Disk /dev/sdb: 4060 MB, 4060086272 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 123 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 2048 = 32901120 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 3 96264 0 Empty
/dev/sdb2 4 123 3855600 b W95 FAT32

But where running cfdisk on /dev/sdb:
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    sdb2 Primary W95 FAT32 987.04
