Your Xorg is in a bad bad situation, I think that the easiest and better thing 
is to reinstall the 10.04.1 downloading it from:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lucid/daily-live/20100816.1/
and verify dowloaded and burned image following 
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
Also I suggest you that never use Synaptic for a distro upgrade, use Update 
manager.
