To test further, I took the attached XML file from this report and replaced an XML file I created by adding a comment through gthumb. gthumb segfaulted again.
I removed the XML file from the folder (leaving other XML files in place) and gthumb did not crash. It therefore does seem that certain XML file contents will cause segfaults.
