Installed the patch related to ALC887 committed into sound-2.6, located at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules
Problem solved. Never actually figured out how to remove the model=asus from the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base but I suppose I didnt have to. Thanks Dave and Dan for your help.
