See http://librarian.launchpad.net/7096933/asoundconf , which pinpoints
the problem. Essentially, PCI peripheral enumeration is
nondeterministic. Sometimes your onboard is able to grab index 0;
othertimes your 24-bit "Live".

You can work around this by executing the following in a Terminal:

echo options snd-via82xx index=-2 |sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

and rebooting.
