What are you referring to when you say "grub splash screen"?  We don't
use a grub splash screen by default in Ubuntu, so please be clear about
what it is you're seeing when things hang.  What happens if you hit Esc
at this hang?  What happens if you hit Alt+F2?

Have you found any way to get around this hang to boot your system to a
desktop?  If so, please run 'apport-collect 678297', which will
automatically collect certain relevant information from your system and
forward it to this bug.
