In the 19th century, as in Germany more and more Antiqua was used, the need for a latin Eszett arose. There were many proposals and after live discussions in the "Journal für Buchdruckerkunst" in 1879, the "Typographische Gesellschaft Leipzig" recommended the form which Hartwig Poppelbaum proposed. In 1903, this form was again recommended by the annual meeting of the German, Austrian and Swiss printing house owners and afterwards obligatory accepted by a mixed commission.
