This bug has been present on my laptop since I bought it and installed 10.04 back in June 2010 and has recurred under 10.10. The last occurrence was on 12 November 2010 immediately prior to my bug report. Since then, however, the problem has not recurred after 20+ reboots. Update Manager installed updates later on the same day. Perhaps one of those updates has resolved the problem for me? Anyway, I'm happy to close this report and resubmit with the additional info requested should it happen again. Thank you to those who have offered assistance.
