I have the same problem with f-spot 0.8.0 when importing .ORF files from an Olympus E1. The thumbnails in the importer show with date 01/01/0001, and then f-spot crashes when you click Import.
If you subsequently try to open f-spot, it crashes with the error message described in bug 636819. To recover, I had to update the time column for the affected photos in the sqlite database which allowed me to open f-spot and delete the incorrectly dated photos. I have tried copying the files off my camera to a local folder and then importing, but this does not help. So I'm guessing that the original reporter of this bug had success because of having put the photos through Shotwell first. I am still using F-spot because Shotwell does not support photo versioning to the same level as F-spot.
