I have had exactly the same problem (maverick, T60 X1300). In addition, I was not able to switch from a console back to gnome. In all cases, SYS-REQ + R then SYS-REQ + K (left Alt + left shift + print + []) brought me back to the GDM login screen so a hard reset is not necessary ...
