I upgraded to the last version available after upgrading my backend and frontend (DB version # update) and am now running 0.23.1+fixes26863-0ubuntu0+mythbuntu3.
XvMC just didn't work (it was worse). I've disabled XvMC to work around the problem and things are ok now.
