Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 10.10
When the computer is booted with external speakers attached via the headphone
jack, they work fine but when they are disconnected the internal speakers
remain mute.
When no external speakers are connected at boot up, the internal ones work fine
but then the external speakers will not work when they are later connected.
It appears that only the speakers selected at boot up will work and further
reboots are required in order to swap.
I have made numerous adjustments to the sound settings using the gui apps and
cli but so far I have failed to resolve the issue.
I also had this problem with 10.04 an had hoped that 10.10 would have resolved
the problem but no luck.
The problem affects all sound apps including the theme played at start up.

Computer has to be rebooted when swapping between internal and external
speakers otherwise they remain mute.
