Hi, I faced the same problem on my Maverick Installation (it was an upgrade from Karmic->Lycid->Maverick). But I could fix it by simply deleting all (!) information on calendars in evolution (I recommend exporting all appointments before doing that). That is deleting the directories /home/$USER/.evolution/cache/calendar AND the directory /home/$USER/.evolution/calendar . Following Sumant's instruction I did erase all the information that evolution stored on calendars in gconf using the gconftool:
gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/evolution/calendar and after some complaints after restarting evolution I am now able to use the calendar as smooth as I'm used to in Ubuntu!
