To amend my previous comment: it works fine when running Maverick natively on my Thinkpad X60 (Intel 945GM GPU), but fails when running inside VirtualBox with guest additions installed from virtualbox-ose- guest-x11 package, as well as with the guest additions shipping with nonfree VirtualBox.
Without guest additions, it works fine.
