Solved it I think.

The problem was indeed the x server configuration that was generated by
the nvidia x server settings while I used it to toggle between the
laptop and my 24" HDMI monitor. I booted to desktop using the old kernel
and opened up the "System=>Administration=>NVIDIA X Server Settings".
The program told me that I am not currently using the nvidia driver and
that I should run an application (I think it was "nvidia-xconfig") as
root to fix it. That's exactly what I did and it broke my old kernel,
but miraculously fixed the two newer ones. In fact, I'm writing this
very text in 2.6.35-22-generic with compiz fully working again.
