I can confirm the behavior on my IBM ThinkCentre 8171-YC3.
1. Boot with USB Flash drive inserted: Drive seen and operational, desktop
icon present, device seen as /dev/sdb and /dev/sdb1, mounted at /media/<drive
name>
2. Eject, remove USB Flash drive and reinsert: Single "blip" on USB Flash drive
LED then nothing. Not seen in lsusb, no icon on desktop, no /dev/sdb nor
/dev/sdb1.

Output of lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release: 10.04
Codename: lucid

Output of uname -a
Linux Utility-Ubuntu 2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 19:48:22 UTC
2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I believe this behavior started with my last update, but cannot confirm
for certain. I booted using the previous kernel: 2.6.32-21-generic but
the behavior persisted.
