Thanks for that, Gustavo. I would just add two things to your instructions:
1. "ulimit -c unlimited" at some point, so that ulimit doesn't prevent a core file from being generated; 2. Remember to specify the display, e.g. "DISPLAY=:0 gnome-session" :-) Even with all that, if Apport is enabled, you don't get a core dump. The only way you get a core is if Apport is disabled (i.e. core_pattern specifies a file instead of a pipe). Very odd.
