This might or might not be the same as my case: can't update from 10.04 to 10.10 on a i586 cpu. The point of failure happened to be ldconfig.real in the package libc-bin_2.12.1-0ubuntu8_i386, which now contains cmov instructions unsupported by i586. Maverick sadly dropped support for i586 ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickMeerkat/ReleaseNotes#Linux%20kernel%202.6.35 ).
