just to point out the situation with Maverick,
can you please start a new session and run this commands in the terminal:

killall gnome-power-manager && gnome-power-manager --verbose 2>&1 | tee
~/gpm.log

reproduce the bug, kill gpm, and attach here the gpm.log file that you can 
found in your home dir.
Also attach here
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/kern.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

If I am using the battery and want to brighten the screen as soon as I increase 
the brightness level the level indicator continues to flash, even if I only 
adjust it by one click/level. This also locks me out of some functions, such as 
turning the computer of via my login, or the system/apllication pull down menus
