Hey, I also have the same problem with my Brother HL-5240.
With one driver "Brother HL-5240 BR-Script3" it only prints about 3 pages and with the other driver "Brother HL-5240 Foomatic/Postscript" it takes ages. For 10 pages, it takes up to 15 minutes or more. I never used to have any problems back in jaunty, in lucid I had problems that PDF's weren't printed at all if they contained too many images (which was my main reason to switch to maverick). There are people with the same issues with Brother printers on this thread, and proposing a workaround: http://newyork.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9755270 I was also suffering from this bug with evince: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cairo/+bug/661724 .
