Thanks for your suggestions. I tried 'sudo apt-get clean' and then tried again 
to manually install (initramfs-tools & bcmwl-kernel-source). But I still am 
getting the same error.

I am using Ubuntu on USB stick (livecd + persistence). Sorry that I
forgot to mention that. Does that affect anything?
