Public bug reported: I boot my system from a usb stick (the home partition is on a separate SD-Card). When I insert the harddrive (without using it) the system boots much faster from the usb stick than without the harddrive while only accessing the harddrive one or two times at the beginning. Without a harddrive in it, ubuntu takes about 80 to 90 seconds each time between showing grub and showing the ubuntu logo plymouth screen and then loads within about 10 seconds to the desktop (really fast).
Were it not much faster with the harddrive (which is not really functional because it has a physical header crash), I would just assume it was a slow usb drive, but this test lead me to believe that somehow the boot system is probing for a harddrive for a long time. Still I have no idea if this is what is really happening... 1)Description: Ubuntu 10.10 Release: 10.10 2) If it is plymouth plymouth: Installed: 0.8.2-2ubuntu5 Candidate: 0.8.2-2ubuntu5 Version table: *** 0.8.2-2ubuntu5 0 500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3) Boot as fast as with a harddrive inserted 4) Boots a lot slower than with an inserted but not used harddrive ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 Package: plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu5 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.35-22.35-generic 2.6.35.4 Uname: Linux 2.6.35-22-generic i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Sun Oct 31 10:06:10 2010 DefaultPlymouth: /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-logo/ubuntu-logo.plymouth InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" - Beta i386 (20100901.1) MachineType: IBM 1866WBA PccardctlIdent: Socket 0: no product info available PccardctlStatus: Socket 0: 3.3V 32-bit PC Card ProcCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic root=UUID=969cbe95-7a27-405e-833c-a16a9b6983e3 ro quiet splash ProcEnviron: LANG=en_US.utf8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcFB: 0 inteldrmfb SourcePackage: plymouth TextPlymouth: /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntu-text/ubuntu-text.plymouth dmi.bios.date: 03/14/2006 dmi.bios.vendor: IBM dmi.bios.version: 75ET56WW (2.02 ) dmi.board.name: 1866WBA dmi.board.vendor: IBM dmi.board.version: Not Available dmi.chassis.asset.tag: No Asset Information dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: IBM dmi.chassis.version: Not Available dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnIBM:bvr75ET56WW(2.02):bd03/14/2006:svnIBM:pn1866WBA:pvrThinkPadX41Tablet:rvnIBM:rn1866WBA:rvrNotAvailable:cvnIBM:ct10:cvrNotAvailable: dmi.product.name: 1866WBA dmi.product.version: ThinkPad X41 Tablet dmi.sys.vendor: IBM ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 maverick -- boot screen takes about 90 seconds between grub and seeing the boot logo https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/669023 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
