On my Toshiba U400 I have the same (or similar) graphics card  as
mentioned above (Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics
Controller), so the problem may be related to it.

As a temporary workaround I use the command (as proposed somewhere)
acpitool -s
to suspend the computer, which works fine.
