Solved problem after some tinkering... Followed recommendations from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xsane/+bug/478761
Originally had modified /etc/sane.d/dll.conf by removing the # from in front of epson2 and epson Restored comment in front of epson2 in this file.
