Tried a second upgrade - same result (btw, the error should say "... pre-depend ...").
Googled the error msg and tried Ilna's solution in "http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3113601.0;imode"; - ooops, missed the "install xorg again" - oh well, it looks like the upgrade is installing OK now.
