Actually Brian I have a case like narcelio, I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.10 and created a separate partition for /var. After I tried to reboot and got unreadahead main process (336) terminated with status 5 and after that it just doesnt complete the booting process. The monitor comes off.
