I had the same problem - repeatedly. However, using Synaptic Package Manager I was able to install the drivers and connect wireless.
I am challenged by the fact that Puppy Linux and RescueCD and a growing group of distributions have no problem just connectiing out of the box. No downloading no configuring - just click the connect and pick a signal. If we don't come to grips with this lousy method of tunning to wireless we can never hope to become the common desktop.
